The benefits of white noise for babies

There isn’t a much hotter topic for new parents than sleep… and how to get more of it. We tiptoe around the house trying to keep the house as silent as possible so baby will sleep. But if you think about where they’ve come from – that is, the womb – it makes sense that they need noise to drift off to the land of nod.

The womb is noisy. From mum’s heartbeat to the swooshing sound of the amniotic fluid to the muffled chatter of the outside world, babies are accustomed to noise. It’s no wonder babies don’t want a bar of it when we try to create silence at sleeptime.

That’s where the benefits of white noise really come into play. White noise may help block out sharp noises and mimic those comfort sounds your baby is used to. It’s no surprise that at Nodiee we’ve big fans of white noise. If you’re curious about the benefits of white noise for sleep, here’s a few things to think about.

White noise explained

So what exactly is white noise? The term describes a noise that contains all frequencies across the sound spectrum. You’re getting a mixed bag of sound waves that might sound something like static you hear when you’re trying to tune into a television or radio channel.

While people often use the term white noise to describe any background noise, there are actually a few varieties.

Pink noise, for instance, contains a mixture of sound waves that diminish in intensity with each higher octave. It’s a lower pitched sound than white noise and something like the sound of a waterfall. And then there’s brown or red noise, which is deeper again, and closer to the sound of heavy rain or ocean waves.

What’s really interesting is that scientists have done quite a bit of research on the potential benefits of white noise – and yes, sleep has been a focus!

What are the benefits of white noise?

While researchers are still studying exactly how white noise may help you sleep, plenty of parents are embracing white noise to help little ones who love nothing better than all night parties! Here are a few ways white noise may help ease bubs into a blissful slumber.

White noise creates a womb like environment.

Picture what babies might be hearing when they’re in the womb, and it’s probably a lower, muffled noise. That’s where white noise, pink noise and all those other wonderful sleep sounds may help by mimicking a womb like environment.

We’ve created our Sleep Assist Smart PRO with 34 soothing sounds, including white noise, pink noise, brown noise and nature sounds. That’s a lot of choices!

White noise blocks out background noise

Is your little one part of a big family? Have noisy neighbours or a bustling neighbourhood? White noise has another potential benefit. In addition to mimicking womb sounds, it also does a great job of blocking out all those loud, sudden and sharp noises that can startle us awake.

White noise helps to build a routine

We’ve all heard about how routines - like feed and play times - can help little ones thrive. And that starts with a good sleep pattern. White noise may help your baby go to sleep, stay asleep, and wake at the same time. If your baby associates white noise with falling asleep, the sound of it can be a strong signal that it's time to go to bed, or that it's time to fall back asleep.

At Nodiee, we’ve really focused on this with our Sleep Assist Smart PRO, which also features programmable coloured lights to help toddlers know when it’s ok to wake up… and when it’s time to stay put in bed.

White noise may help babies to fall asleep

Ultimately does white noise help babies sleep? The research suggests it may. One early study published by the American National Library of Medicine, found white noise may indeed help parents with unsettled babies. In that study, 80% of their participants fell asleep within 5 minutes when white noise was played.

A more recent 2018 study on collicky babies, also found white noise to be more effective than swinging/swaying in helping to significantly reduce crying and increase sleep duration.

White noise helps you to sleep

When babies sleep, parents sleep too. But white noise machine benefits aren’t just for bubs and kids. There are plenty of adults who have trouble falling or staying asleep. That’s why we designed the Sleep Assist Smart PRO for babies… and shift workers, adults in noisy households, or anyone who just needs to wind down and sleep easier.

While we started with white noise, the Sleep Assist Smart PRO features a large range of sounds including ocean waves and light rain. You can keep it running all night, or choose the timer option for automatic switch off.

Keeping families safe and sound

At Nodiee, we’re on a mission to help families sleep soundly. And because we all know that safety is a priority, we also recommend the Raising Children Network’s safety tips – including keeping bub in your room until 6 months of age, always putting them down to sleep on their back, and making sure there aren’t bed coverings or toys in the cot that might cover their face.
